This essay is really good but I'd argue, contra
@zunguzungu, that the original comic *doesn't* think Veidt is right about inevitable nuclear conflict. part of the point is that he's a dingus who killed all those folks because he thinks he's smarter than he is.3 replies 1 retweet 23 likesShow this thread -
Replying to @nberlat @zunguzungu
Yeah if the Tales of the Black Freighter comic is meant to parallel Ozymandias then the big reveal is that the crisis was fake The pirates on the Black Freighter never attacked the town, they had no interest in it, the narrator's loved ones were safe

All of the death and destruction was actually caused by the narrator himself, the only weapon the Black Freighter needed was his own fear and certainty, and their only goal was his corruption

Moore was hinting at the fact that even if everything Veidt does goes completely according to plan, the world is actually in a much worse situation than before The peace he forged is completely dependent on him upholding the secret, he's the single point of failure

His whole plan depends on this absolute confidence that as the secret ruler of the world and puppetmaster of the fake war against the aliens he won't falter, or go mad, or become corrupt (Note that the Black Freighter narrator describes his madness as a long sleepless vigil)

That's the meaning of "Nothing ever ends", it's not just a general philosophical statement but one about Veidt's problem specifically Note that this is set up with Veidt actively planning to shepherd the world for a full century, since his superhuman training slows his aging

The thing being the HBO series actively ignored this thread and indeed contradicted it by having Veidt get old and kind of senile and saying Redford ignored his advice even though he was directly blackmailing him

Which was also Nighthawk’s problem with the Squadron Supreme taking over.
