Yeah it's like if you'd seen it you'd probably have made the joke about how they'd all vote the trans girl dead first just to get that out of the way

I have a soft spot for this kind of goofy thought experiment thing The kind of movie where no one gets a name and is identified just by their identity category (the Lesbian, the Homophobe, the Veteran, the Little Girl, the Pregnant Woman)

I don't think the movie is quite so facile as all that The Pragmatists aren't really the bad guys, at least not universally, it's supposed to deliberately make you uncomfortable that anyone should have the right to make this kind of decision

The Veteran's moral self-righteousness is as repulsive as it is attractive depending on how you look at it, as is often the case with self-righteous veterans

Like, leaving pregnancy out of it, most of us have a moral intuition that children matter more than adults, but philosophically it's a position that has problems And pragmatically, if you load all the lifeboats with only children, those children won't live very long

And yeah it's kind of the point that the situation is absurdly contrived Most of us don't ever find ourselves in a situation where we directly vote that one person has more right to live than another The question is if we do that indirectly

That's kind of what Penelope was getting at, the alienation you feel when people get super performative about how their support for pregnant women and mothers is endless and you know that's a category that you'll never fall into

And the weird paradox that *because* pregnancy is seen as a selfless act of physical sacrifice to birth the next generation, that becomes a selfish reason to do it Great strategy to keep from being voted off

Anyway yeah they just created the list of characters by writing down single words or phrases for "kinds of people who elicit strong reactions" The Veteran, the Cancer Survivor, the Obnoxious Atheist, the Wealthy Suburban Mom, the Illegal Immigrant
