I just get nervous about AITA posts sometimes particularly when it feels clear to me that the internet is freaking out over a hypothetical cis woman's feelings in a way that they never would about a real trans woman's

Pregnancy, for better or for worse, is a big deal and we have a lot of kneejerk cultural responses to it

But yeah, I think I've talked about the movie Circle before (Not The Circle with Tom Hanks and Emma Watson)

It's a weird microbudget science fiction thing you can still find on Netflix A bunch of randomly selected people from the streets of LA wake up in a surreal chamber arranged in a big circle It transpires this is some sort of test or game where every five minutes one person dies

They get controls they can use to nominate and vote on people to die If they don't vote, a victim is chosen at random (and any attempt to defy the game by leaving is punished with instant death)

No one knows how long the game goes or how many survivors will be allowed to leave at the end (if any) But assuming that that is the game's purpose, a fierce debate instantly ensues among all these strangers over whose life matters more than who else

It's very college dorm room but still it's thought provoking, especially for gaming geeks (the game is clearly inspired by Mafia and other "voting off the island" style social games)

After the chaos of the first few rounds, the players split into two defined factions One faction comes to the consensus that two of the players, a preteen girl and a pregnant young woman, are obviously more valuable than anyone else and must be saved for last

The other faction exists solely to oppose this first faction - they all, selfishly, at least want the *chance* to survive and believe the first faction will make that impossible The Protectors and the Pragmatists

It's obviously a fraught issue and there's obvious philosophical objections to raise to it, especially if you're pro-choice and you don't buy the argument that a pregnant person is two lives for the price of one

Another young woman starts arguing "I *could* be pregnant! I could get pregnant two weeks after I leave here! I could have ten babies and she could stop at one!" etc

And yet having a person who actually is pregnant overrides all those arguments Which is an extra fraught thing for queer or trans people
