Based on an AITA post I just saw, help me out a second, as an intersex woman who will never conceive. Is there an idea taken as axiomatic that a person who willfully remains absent from the occasion of their partner giving birth is committing an unspeakable moral dereliction?

More like it’s seen as ultra inconsiderate/neglectful. My uncle stayed at work the day his daughter was born and his (now ex) wife never forgave him. Makes more sense if you think of childbirth like major surgery: bad to not be there if your significant other wants you around.

It's worse, you're usually unconscious for major surgery. The point isn't the event, it's providing support.

General anesthesia is supposed to always be a last resort, it's not to be done lightly because there's always a chance of something going wrong and the patient never waking up
