I'm specifically talking about the fact that his unrelated friend who has a dying grandfather doesn't really have a moral claim on him

In the abstract, no. In the specific, maybe. My wife and I have absolutely put one another to grave inconvenience to help friends in need. But we talked about it first. And we knew going in that we each had pre-existing obligations, & would support each other in meeting them.

Yeah my own marriage similarly did not have this level of commitment And ideally I would have done a better job of grokking that but oh well we're leaving that one behind in this decade
