I am so tired of arguments like this about where IQ or g (the "general factor of intelligence") actually "exist"https://twitter.com/Malnormalulo/status/1211029356899905536?s=19 …

It's obviously possible to be a much stronger lifter than average and also a much slower runner than average Hell it's possible to be extremely strong and not be able to run *at all* (people in wheelchairs) It's just unusual

But sure in most people there's something you can vaguely call a "general factor of athleticism" and you can even label certain specific actual physical things that it describes (red blood cell capacity, lung capacity, muscle fiber ratio, etc) It's not that useful though

If you wanted to draft someone for a sports team, or for the military, or do a physical checkup for the sake of their health, you would want to ask about the actual specific stats Giving a single number that's their "AQ score" would be pointless

Yeah, and I mean - just look at the NFL draft (and other sports drafts). Enormous amounts of measurables, plus up to four years of data doing the exact thing, and they blow it half the time.

General consensus was that Lamar Jackson was no better than the 5th best QB in the 2018 draft, and there were questions about if he'd be a capable pro at all! Whoops, MVP.

It’s worse for IQ, because what we consider smartness has a bunch of different facets to it, some of which seem to correlate inversely. The people I know who are best at math tend to be pretty bad at, say, noticing things in their immediate surroundings.

Yeah and we know that at actual top tier levels of competition, different measures of athleticism do directly conflict You CAN'T be the world's weightlifting champion and the world's sprinting champion at the same time Putting on bulk for one harms you for the other
