Well, that's good, at least. If I was unable to do required physical stuff for the necessary length of time (or, if the temperature is just above 90F even if I'm not doing anything), what would have happened? Being kicked out and sent home?

It's a pretty big bureaucratic nightmare to get kicked out of boot camp even with that being an extremely common boot camp outcome When I was there it meant you'd go to a "med squadron" and they'd evaluate for a while if you REALLY couldn't cut it or just needed to toughen up

it's not an ideal situation because boot camp is basically jail and it's possible to linger in purgatory there in the med squadrons for several times longer than boot camp is actually supposed to take you DO collect paychecks though because you're still technically employed

Apropos of nothing, the upcoming Mulan movie has me thinking about the boot camp sequence in the Disney original and how if you read between the lines it's a more realistic situation than we would've thought as kids

They're preparing these guys to be reserves and support way behind the front lines, realistically enough, since they're by definition the bottom of the barrel conscripts they got once they told every single family they had to send one guy

The crux of the movie is actually Mushu changing the order Li Shang gets telling them they have to deploy to the front immediately even though that's a terrible idea, because he wants to give Mulan the opportunity for a medal (Thus inadvertently saving China)

It does confirm that Mulan's fears about her father were exaggerated, like they can't be the only family in this situation and she's been grouped with everyone else who sent someone who was fat or old or otherwise would've been judged unfit to serve in peacetime

George Lucas voice: "Mushu really is the key to all this"

That's also why Li Shang fast tracks Mulan's discharge ("Pack up, go home, you're through"), not because she's that much more unfit than the other fuckups in her class but because Mushu has gotten her caught cheating multiple times

One of those things where he's decided it'd be easier to wash her out now than court-martial her at some point down the line

Disney Mulan wasn't my favorite movie but, I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm kind of sad the new one has no Mushu In the general sense that Mulan seems to now be a supersoldier from the very beginning rather than starting as the loser protagonist of a boot camp comedy

Eh, probably inevitable result of a shift to a conventional heroic drama.

Ironically this is the complaint in China about the new Mulan, that they *have* plenty of conventional heroic Mulan movies and what they were interested in was the Disney movie version
