I mean I agree but at the same time as someone who kind of got into "Y2K culture" at the time there was a tremendous amount of irresponsible doomsaying, people saying the Y2K problem *could not* be fixed and would *inevitably* lead to the collapse of the global economy

There were multiple novels about a straight up nuclear exchange caused by Y2K, a bunch of articles saying that all non-Y2K compliant devices would instantly stop working somehow with the rollover, etc

Sure, but for people who don't really remember that period of time it's important to note that the irresponsible hysteria isn't exaggerated in hindsight either There really was a major upsurge in interest in prepper communities due to Y2K

Yup. Some time after most of the code had been fixed, senior management started reading doomladen articles about Y2K and started demanding more work, more evidence of busyness on something already addressed by then.

Oh, and there was not a peep out of anyone on March 1 2000. We fixed code for that as well (think about it...) but there was no news-cycle induced crisis about it.

I wasn't around for March 1 2000, but I definitely remember the 2008 leap second, which NTP didn't handle in a way (at the time) which played nicely with distributed software. That was fun.

The "leap seconds" we do in order to keep the official calendar year as closely synced to the physical solar year as possible probably do more harm than good for this reason Like unless you actually believe in astrology or something what's the real benefit
