Yeah I told the story once of working for a tourism company in DC and dealing with a Chinese guy who got really upset that no DC tour packages included a brief side trip to New York to see the Statue of Libertyhttps://twitter.com/DanaSchwartzzz/status/1211087142748737537 …

The idea that putting the central government somewhere other than the actual "main city" of the country is a perverse inefficiency was, of course, an opinion shared by diehard New Yorker Alexander Hamilton but it's too late now

Also like to be fair in China the largest city in the country is Shanghai and Beijing, the capital, is #2 But that's still different from the US where Washington DC is #20 (which a mostly due to bullshit zoning laws forcing massive Beltway sprawl)

To be fair, wasn't Philadelphia the biggest city in 1789, not New York? I remember hearing that but it could be wrong.

No New York was #1 (33,000 people) and Philly was #2 (28,000)

Yup, by contemporary borders, New York was bigger. By modern borders, Philadelphia was bigger than Manhattan (Manhattan is only ~10% bigger today) but smaller than the Five Boroughs combined.
