Yeah I told the story once of working for a tourism company in DC and dealing with a Chinese guy who got really upset that no DC tour packages included a brief side trip to New York to see the Statue of Libertyhttps://twitter.com/DanaSchwartzzz/status/1211087142748737537 …

A friend of mine from the UK is visiting America. He's in Chicago. I live in Los Angeles. "Get on a train!" he says.

The idea that putting the central government somewhere other than the actual "main city" of the country is a perverse inefficiency was, of course, an opinion shared by diehard New Yorker Alexander Hamilton but it's too late now

Also like to be fair in China the largest city in the country is Shanghai and Beijing, the capital, is #2 But that's still different from the US where Washington DC is #20 (which a mostly due to bullshit zoning laws forcing massive Beltway sprawl)

That's not even that far! Also China is pretty big too, it's not like Beijing and Shanghai are that close together.

Yes, well We established that the train would take four hours and the only faster method was to fly, upon which he asked why the train was so damn slow A decent question really

I was in Seattle for a couple of weeks and my brother was briefly in New York. Our dad, back in the UK, suggested we get together. We were, at that point, further apart than we ever were.

I once had to break it to some American tourists over the blare of the ships horn from the harbour beside the train station that there is in fact no train from Ireland to the UK.

In Australia it isn't unheard of for tourists to get into a taxi in Sydney and ask to be driven to Uluru (a trip of 2840km) or even be driven to Melbourne (880km) and be surprised that it isn't a short sightseeing detour
