[RoS spoilers] Yes, and it sucked. TLJ was, in fact, not perfect, and the way it ended Finn's arc in the second act and sent a compelling antagonist down the garbage disposal was amongs the worst things about it We didn't get closure with DJ eitherhttps://twitter.com/AdamLBrinklow/status/1209555169869877248 …

[RoS spoilers] Honestly the entire Canto Bight sequence might have been saved if it stopped fucking around with Benicio Del Toro and introduced Phasma pursuing Finn as some kind of Implacable [Wo]man Like some kind of evil Maiev Shadowsong figure representing Finn's trauma

[RoS spoilers] Maz Kanata also got the shaft in this movie, which is interesting because she's an Abrams creation to begin with After all her cool insight on the force and mysticism and stuff she's basically reduced at the end to being Leia's Anger Translator It's really gross

[RoS spoilers] Like she was one of the best things about TFA and her cameo in TLJ looked like a more enjoyable movie than most of what we got and then she spends the last movie as basically a hospice nurse Idk man it's not great, it's not great at all

She also gave Chewie a medal. Which came the hell out of nowhere and completely broke the scene's good will just to appease a certain kind of fan.

Charitably, I kind of want to think this was an inside joke between Chewie and Leia Like in Shadowrun where Dunkelzahn's Will said "To Alamais, I leave the fruitcake we have exchanged every Christmas since 2020. Unlike you, I’m really dead." Like he seems to have found it funny

The scene works better if you read it as that literally being Han's medal that she's hung onto possibly since their divorce and at least since his death (which is why she's clutching it when she's lying in bed, using it as a spell focus to mindfuck Ben)

That reading could go either way--a nice memento, or further reminder of Chewie's loss-- but it gives far greater benefit of the doubt than the movie has earned, especially in context of all the other tidbits JJ threw at the screen specifically to "please the fans".

Well, no, we prominently see the medal earlier in the movie, Leia picks it up and holds it to her chest as she lies back in bed for the telepathy scene

The thing is it's weird because this doesn't totally make sense and we have to fill in stuff like why exactly she has Han's medal in this scene (holding onto her memory of Han and his death is how she breaks through Ben's defenses or whatever)

This is just them recycling scenes because Fisher died She repeatedly mentioned a whole sequence with Han's funeral they cut out of TLJ completely, and originally this was obviously a scene of her being overwhelmed with grief after speaking at his service
