Ethernet began as a ship-to-shore radio data protocol develop at the University of Hawaii called ALOHAnet.
@BobMetcalfe developed the idea into its cabled form at Xerox PARC. The concept of “ether” is because, even in wired form, it is a shared broadcast medium. -
To put a sharper point in it, WiFi is Ethernet, just one aspect of the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard. And it can do so because it was designed with wireless connectivity in mind even well before WiFi was realistic.
