Just so you’re aware, if you know someone who’s high risk or immunocompromised and don’t do everything you can to make them feel safe during this pandemic, that will forever effect the relationship you have with them and how they see you.

Not an article I wanted to write.
The deadly H5N1 bird flu is spreading widely, including to mammals.
For the first time, it's now likely spreading mammal-to-mammal, among minks which are exceptionally well-suited conduits to humans.
We must act now.

I work multiple part-time jobs rather than 1 full-time (it helps me avoid burnout and boredom). I ask for clear directions, for verbal directions to be written down, and to have more time for tasks that involve reading or writing.

Anyways!! not everyone wants a strange dog bounding up to them, even if you’re like “oh he’s just friendly! He won’t hurt you!” like. You actually don’t know that. Leash your fucking dog. As the article says, it’s not your fur baby, it’s an unpredictable animal.

fast for me to react and use it. The owner also didn’t utter a word of apology or ask if I was alright; he just called his dog’s name in an admonishing tone and they walked away as I yelled at the guy. 😒

I did everything “right” btw - didn’t make eye contact w/ the dog as it ran up to me, held my hand out for it to sniff. It appeared to lose interest and walked away, but then suddenly snarled, whirled around and bit me behind my knee. I carry pepper spray, but it happened too

important article. I was bitten by an off-leash dog last week (I’m fine, it tore my leggings but didn’t break the skin); totally preventable had the owner been responsible. Dog owners need to keep their dogs leashed at all times in public areas - yes, even on lightly used trails.

People realize that adults get flu ~twice a decade, right? Setting aside even all the terrible Long Covid, if the severity of acute COVID becomes similar to flu, and you get it 15-20x a decade, you are at a 7.5-10x more risk of dying from it.

would love to know if other disabled folks here have tried CPT (cognitive processing therapy) and what your experience w/ it has been. It seems futile to me but that may be bc I’m just starting out? idk. #Disability #DisabilityTwitter
OK.
So a huge problem here is that most people are looking at acute covid from an individual viewpoint and seeing low risk, when they should be looking at long covid from a societal viewpoint and seeing that we're in massive trouble.

alas, in my rageposting I forgot to add alt text to that pic.
Alt text: a photo of my corsi-rosenthal box, made with two sets of 3 asiahorse 360 RGB fans, two fíltrete MERV 13 filters, and duct tape. The fans are emitting a hot pink glow, causing the filters to glow pink as well.

I had a coworker a few yrs ago who was a gym bro, and after he found out I drank beer he’d hound me about how many calories and how much sugar it had (“like drinking a whole loaf of bread! Ew!”) and tell me to drink straight vodka instead, like he did. it was really sad

For the 15 mins you're at the pharmacy, or the half hour you're on transit, or the hour you're at the grocery store, masking in indoor public spaces helps make that space safer & more accessible during an ongoing mass death & disabling event

part of the reason I’m so vocal about the pandemic not being over is that once this happens, the very few tools that we all supposedly have will go away & not only will we have no data (or every little) around covid rates etc. but we’ll literally be on our own navigating covid.

things i feel the need to add because i keep seeing these
5) don't lie to people about your risk levels because you feel bad
6) don't lash out at your friends who are taking this more seriously than you
7) don't hide the fact that you were infected because you're ashamed

Nicholas Winton helped 669 Jewish children escape the Nazis. His efforts went unrecognized for 50 years. Then in 1988, while sitting as a member of a TV audience, he suddenly found himself surrounded by the kids he’d rescued, now adults.
I like to remember this every Jan 27th.

And I will just say it so there is no ambiguity: solidarity with disabled folks is both foundational in the fight against fascism and self-protective as you are one infection/injury/unlucky genetic mutation away from being seen as surplus

People need to understand that we have:
- an ongoing pandemic that is disabling millions of people
- a huge and growing hatred and dismissal of disabled folks
- mass abandonment by govts
- the solidification of the police state
Please do the math.

The footage is as damming as it possibly could be. The officers immediately escalated everything, brutally handling #TyreNichols, while shouting contradictory commands, making it impossible for him to comply.
This wasn't an attemptped arrest, this was a lynching, simple& clear.

The actual crisis: Cops killed more people last yr than any yr on record. We don’t get public pleas from officials to stop the killings or for cops to be “peaceful.” We get pleas for people to respond in an orderly manner to the heinous violence inflicted upon their communities.

CW: ableism, eugenics
Trotting this guy out to normalize death and devaluing anyone over 75 as the US sees huge reductions in life expectancy and elders were and are decimated by COVID is a move. And saying that our contribution to society determines right to life is eugenics

Not only does he care little about disabled people surviving Covid, but those who he helped disable are also now disposable.

2. Death is a loss but living too long is also a loss. It leaves most of us debilitated and unable to contribute to society. We are no longer remembered as being vibrant and engaged, but instead as feeble and ineffectual.
