One of Michelangelo's most remarkable innovations is his elimination of a #frame. Figures are cut off at the edges, as if to imply that we are seeing only a portion, and the scene continues laterally. Michelangelo portrays our uncertainity
The commanding figure of Christ dominates The Last Judgment #fresco. In earlier sketches Michelangelo had drawn Christ seated in the traditional manner, but in the painting he seems to be striding forwardpic.twitter.com/5kDgNei2ay
His stance reminds us of images of Christ at his #Resurrection. His raised arm, a gesture of command, setting in motion the events. He displays the wounds on his hands and feet and side, reminding us of the price he payed for humans to have an #eternal life.
This man has got a #devil that's pulling at him from below. His psychological intensity is giving him the name “The #Damned Man”.
He seems to have just realized that he's going to spend eternity in #hell.

He covers one eye with his hand as if he can't believe, he can't bear to see his #fate. (Hell is represented on the right side)
His left eye is wide open as if this is the moment of recognition.

The profound #pessimism of this #fresco
can be seen just to the right and below Christ. We see a nude figure on a cloud, who's holding a knife in one hand and a skin in the other. This is Saint #Bartholomew, who was skinned alive.pic.twitter.com/qaTDOMz7e2
The face on the skin is a #selfportrait by the artist: between Christ and the Damned Man.
And worse than that, Bartholomew seems to be holding the skin so lightly as if he might let it fall into the boat of Charon on its way to hell.
