Some tips for building an Android ROM 👇 1. Use mitigations=off on the kernel command line 2. Do not use zram as an output directory 3. A separate partition is a better idea 3.1. Use ext4 and disable journaling 3.2. If on an SSD, use blkdiscard instead of rm -rf out Thread:

It still does not remove the need of SRAM inside the UFS chips. It's still used for FTL's operations like wear leveling or GC, so I don't know how it could be any cheaper. (9/9)

HPB is still just a L2P map caching mechanism. It is not intended to replace S/DRAM for flash storage like HMB (unless something drastically changed for the UFS 3.1 standard). (8/9)

    3. Anton from AnandTech made a point where HPB could make future UFS chips less expensive. I don't see it that way. (7/9)

With smartphones these days having 8 GB or more RAM, I genuinely hope all flagship smartphones to feature this. I'll rant on my Twitter if I find one that doesn't. (6/9)

    2. UFS 3.1 now implements Samsung's HPB as a standard, but an optional feature. (We saw this first in action with the Pixel 3: ) (5/9)

I hope smarter people than me can come up with a balanced trade-off for Write Booster. This will inevitably perform much better in benchmarks and people will drool over it. (4/9)

The better way imho is to issue fsync less and utilize host page cache, which I think f2fs with fsync_mode=nobarrier does quite well in practice. (3/9)

It'll all depend on the implementation, but all SSDs with SLC caching I've seen so far enters idle state much later since it has to flush SLC-written data lazily back to TLC mode. (2/9)

    1. UFS 3.1 includes Write Booster to improve burst performance for short-term like PC's SSDs. I'm not sure if Write Booster in mobile is a good idea. Heck, I actually want to disable it on my laptop's SSD. (1/9)

JEDEC and its weird versioning scheme continues. I'd personally version this revision UFS 4 lol UFS 3.1, my thoughts 👇
