Is there a snappy term for the age at which you would have died, had it not been for modern medicine? (Eg, I would have died at 34 if not for an ovarian cyst removal.)

I used to play this game with classes, but given that about 1/4 of all ancient babies died before 1, and about half of all people didn’t reach 10, I think we mostly underestimated the risks.

I calculated it once, and I would have died about 6 times already, including not being born at all and not having survived my first week!

I could have died at birth because I was a c-section baby. Otherwise, my shattered wrist five years ago probably would have required an amputation (and led to gangrene) in previous centuries.

Interesting. And 17, or probably even earlier than that from supre ventricular tachycardia for me. 17 was when it almost killed me and I finally got surgery, but without meds it probably would have killed me even earlier 🫠

I would have died at birth because I was a sickly child that was born nearly 3 months premature.

Oh yeah that’s a fun game, especially when you factor in childhood illness, infections, and injuries, or chronic diseases that would have gone undiagnosed and untreated.
