Linus understands perfectly well that Oracle "owns" the IP behind ZFS and has a track record of being suit happy. They'll likely wait for big accounts to start using it before playing their hand. He's not wrong. Looking at Google vs Oracle over Java.

This does not in any way explain why he characterized it as "just a buzzword" or "unmaintained", which are my actual complaints. I have no issue with Linus not wanting to integrate ZFS into the kernel. THAT part's sensible.

Good follow up from
@arstechnica about the use of ZFS, and how misrepresented stats shouldn't be used to inform dogma.https://twitter.com/arstechnica/status/1216719306177830913 …Hvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi

Good for you taking this on. Another example of arrogance on the part of some people leading to being uninformed leading to other being misinformed about what's otherwise a really, really important technology to a lot of people.

@richgel99 I'm not much of a Linux/Linus fanboy, but after seeing how Oracle handles Java, I wouldn't want to touch anything they have their hands in with a ten foot pole either. The article reads like a propaganda/disinformation piece paid by Oracle TBH ;)

It was fine if the reason was just "Oracle". The kernel ABI change (only make this available to GPL projects) is suspect, and then the attacks on it's quality make this actively user-hostile. Why won't I ever recommend Linux for a critical project? Because of stuff like this.

Nice write up, and I can also attest to ZFS saving my data in the face of many drive failures. But I was wondering why the symbol might have been pulled other than for spite?
-
And when I say multiple, I mean at the same time, and 3 drives failing in a zraid2 set. The fact that I only lost a small percentage of the data still boggles me.

CDDL and GPL aren't incompatible, according to (gasp) law professors. Fun fact: neither Torvalds nor Stallman have *any* formal law education.https://opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/2094/are-cddl-and-gpl-really-incompatible …
-
TBF, the original "not compatible with GPL" doesn't really come from either Torvalds or Stallman, it came from Sun when they authored the license. https://lwn.net/Articles/114840/ … See specifically patent provisions in 6.2-6.3, which terminate rights under patent-related circumstances.
