I guess the trick is to get an intern you somehow supervise, so that you get to somehow be involved in cool projects

I think there is a real mechanism here: interns are put on important (don't bore them!) but not urgent (don't pressure them) work. This is often the most enjoyable work, but work managers have a very hard time scheduling with the team. All unimportant but urgent work they miss.
