Why do people not reduce the risk of asking people out by having friends do a behind-the-scenes discussion and negotiation, just like in 9th grade? * "_____ will say yes if you agree to go to the movies every second week and buy the candy. Also the sweatpants have to go."

Unlike 9th grade, I think people don't have enough mutual contacts all swimming around each other to make this strategy work. Even if they did, they'd probably be too proud and private to seek the help of others. Too bad, actually. We should live more like a village.
