This is deeper than I was expecting. Lots of questions bubbling up about the nature of knowledge, the goals of academia and what it means for knowledge to be functional.

Curiosity optimizes functionality. Being open to new information allows you to repeatedly test and refine your ideas. Those who lack curiosity are less open to being wrong and, paradoxically, will end up being wrong more often.

So, yes curiosity is a path to functionality, while narrowness and certainty (perhaps because you have a degree) may be the equivalent of being epistemologically swole and taking selfies in the bathroom mirror.
