Given enough intimacy and comfort with somebody, we naturally devolve into more animalistic, child-like states, communicating more physically, more playfully, growling, chirping, moaning, etc. Our rational states serve as protectors—if not needed, we readily dispose of them.

Yes, children especially need the physicality, the embodied attention. Even saying “I love you” to a child is not nearly as communicative and powerful as a hug.
