The Torch is a metaphor for—what I’m postulating is—the primary source of meaning in our lives: a continuity that we participate in, protect, and pass on. 2/

The Torch is partly a metaphor for genetics. We pass on genetics. Sex in meaningful. Having children is meaningful. The loss of a child is devastating. Retirement, old age, and death is less troubling when people have many descendants. Etc. 3/

The Torch is also a metaphor for culture. We pass on culture. Inheriting, participating, creating culture is meaningful. Being part of something bigger than ourselves is meaningful. The notion of being remembered after we die is meaningful. Etc. 4/

Crisis is partly that we’re cut off from this Torch. Disconnected from family. Not having children. Lack of community. Culture of ancestors lost. Disconnected from the land. Lack of feeling of legacy through our work. World ending. Lack of genetic + cultural continuity. Etc. 6/6
