Is that relevant? What about all these authors and artists whose work never sold well or much of it wasn’t published until after they died? Were they not writers or artists, having been paid little or nothing for much of their work?

I agree, many celebrated artists were never commercially successful in their lifetime.
Even now it's very hard to get paid for being creative. It only takes a google search to see how much fantastic work is being done all over the world *for free* by many, many talented artists.
