That seems like a useful formulation of the problem. But what if by making meaning of something, the something becomes more debilitating, not less?

That is a good observation. Entirely plausible. Could we say that's still a failure to make meaning? Bad meaning-making?

That seems closer to the mark. You want the story you tell yourself about whatever happened to provide you with a locus of control that lets you live your life in spite of it. The map needs to be accurate, but also help you get through rough territory. A poor map fails to do both
