The internet allows people to go 'shopping' for tribes. Free to leave any tribe whenever they want, they will likely shop until finding those that agree with them, escaping the regulatory pushback of coexistence. This gives the internet a natural polarizing mechanic.

Totally agree. Governments and many corporations are monopolies that struggle in this environment. More of our work should be done in communities we choose, not through winner-take-all politics. To thrive again, we must cultivate civic life in cyberspace.

Counter theory: unlike in physical space, you have infinity different neighbours one click away, so it is much easier to pop your false consensus bubble.
