Just gonna say it: that's a lot of doctors reciting talking points and not thinking critically about the big picture. The point of the benchmarking is to lower costs. What you all view as a terrible flaw, others view as a feature.

Benchmarking is price setting. Price setting doesn’t work. Ask the Soviets or the North Koreans. And docs are in the trenches fighting off microaggressions from insurance companies everyday with our patients. Benchmarking gives them the ultimate weapon to crush patient care.

Price setting is arguably the ONLY thing that works. Most major developed economies use it to control healthcare costs. Oh, and Maryland.

Maryland gets an additional $1600/Medicare patient as part of the waiver so that helps offset other costs and uncompensated care. They have a deal that isn’t still without its problems and would not likely be applicable on a national scale.

The inefficiencies of anything run by the government.... I get suspicious whenever subsidies are involved. Think bank bailouts, farm subsidies....and well, government healthcare subsidies. Think Soviets, North Korea...

North Korea, famous primarily for its government subsidy programs

Also, frankly, it only takes a brief glance at cost comparisons between European countries and the US to instantly conclude that the comparative inefficiency of private health insurance is vastly higher. An entire industry of middlemen taking a cut, how's that for inefficient?
