Getting a PhD is only the first stage of a scientific career, and its purpose is to learn how to do research. If you need to know how to do research to even start, then I'm not sure what the point is. 2/5

Sure, these schools are prestigious, but, as US institutions, they often require 4-6 years to finish the PhD. You also need to account for the time needed to get these additional publications. 3/5

Is it really this much worse to get a PhD at a slightly worse school, and to prove your worth with your research work? I had no prior ML work when I applied for PhD, and I got rejected from Stanford and from Toronto (which isn't even considered "top", I guess). 4/5

Now, I'm about to graduate after about three years at Oxford, and I can keep doing whatever research I like, and wherever I want. What's the point of dragging the PhD out into 6+ years total? 5/5

As a fresh graduate trying to start my PhD. That type of requirements are just bad. A PhD should be the start, where you publish your major studies and learn proper research. Schools should be looking for potential, not already established researchers.

And if you already have 2 papers on a top ML conference, why even bother with a PhD? You clearly are experienced and can make a name for yourself. Start a company or wtv

In an ideal world yes, but I think in reality establishing a good cohort is a crucial element of success, and it's maybe easier to do that at better university than worse?

Whether it is better or not depends on the goal. You could even spend several years doing research and learning before starting your PhD, so that your PhD can be more successful. But what's the point?

I think the main issue is that the demand for ML PhDs has far exceeded the supply. What happens then when you have too many qualified candidates is you find artificial ways to thin the herd.
-
True but people who know how to lead projects will somehow always find right opportunities whereas those who did PhDs just to make shinny resumes will struggle. If I'm not wrong
