The CO2 released per km depends on the aircraft type, occupancy, etc. But in 2016, this source says domestic flights in the US averaged 110 g C02e per km per passenger. (http://css.umich.edu/factsheets/carbon-footprint-factsheet …). Tho an official-looking European source says 244 g CO2/km https://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/daviz/specific-co2-emissions-per-passenger-3#tab-chart_1 …
Let’s say that europeans living less than 500km away from Berlin took trains, for an average of 28 g CO2/km. Go trains! Then… suspense… a rough estimate of the overall emissions is 189230 kg C02, or 418832kg if we use the 244g/km estimate. Let’s break that down.
At around 10 kg of equivalent CO2 for a burger, that’s equivalent to 19000-42000 burgers

Or like 18500-41000 10-minute hot showers
As a field, we need to improve the sustainability of conference travel. Every conference needs to put talks and posters online. Every conference needs a sustainability coordinator
Sad to see a 0 from latin America :(
Zero from Africa too. Not only are conferences like this expensive in terms of carbon output they’re expensive in terms of $$$. The global south will feel the negative effects of climate change harder but don’t even get to experience the positive activities that cause it
And that's not including the carbon cost of printing all these posters that will likely only be used once. an archaic practice that has to stop.
