**BREAKING** ALL HANDS ON DECK!! We need people at Maimonides Medical Center, 10th Ave & 49th to stop from deporting the brother of the man they shot in the face so he doesn’t talk. There are 7 ICE vehicles there.

of the day, still from the report from 1964. I haven't heard "if you're worried abt preconviction reoffense, speed up trials" this round...the volume is just so much higher thanks to the carceral state.

5/ my bad, it wasn't a newspaper, it was and their report "Open Roads and Overflowing Jails," citing to an article I couldn't track down. Anyways. How will this play out here? The upstate/western NY/downstate divide is real.

4/ an article I read in a smaller town IL paper was pretty clear bail/jail was how they do things like support ppl's opioid detox when there isn't $ for treatment. Can't find it now will find it later. In case you were wondering how broken this is, it's REALLY BROKEN.

3/ is this what's happening here? Great q. I'm a 2L, my research time is limited. In the city there is pushback, in the suburbs TONS, and western ny/upstate (IL's downstate) - I will do digging. The first article I saw was ridic fearmongering. You're shocked not shocked.

2/ IL is super local in how it handles bail, the statewide law was loose. Cook County made further reforms, while downstate jurisdictions basically said "this wasn't for us, make it optional." did an amazing report on this. + are trying to change the law statewide.

If I was not a 2L I would be spending my time right now researching parallels between the Illinois backlash and the one in NY - both big upstate/downstate divides, w/very diff arrest profiles + access to resources. But, I'm a 2L, so I have to read crim pro.

“While the public accepts this trade-off of security for the liberty of wealthy defendants, when it comes to the poorest and most vulnerable members of society accused of the least serious crimes, there seems to be constitutional amnesia.”

Again! This has been borne out for decades. Ppl accused of serious crimes don't jump bail, but we use them to pretend bail is justified. Still reading this study from the 1960s, still mad about

Also please note the part where outcomes are better for ppl out. THIS IS NOT NEWS GUYS THIS STUDY IS FROM 1964. (props to - this is y'all's study!)

Reading abt bail studies and reforms in the 1960s. How are we still here?! Also, this was DOJ supported. What a different era. The sick part? Even though this was the 1960s, these absolute amounts - $500, $1500, $2500 - still hold ppl all over the country. 1/

Watching a kid - 19- go home on supervised release with supportive programming because the judge agrees that's the least restrictive condition and he's no risk of flight - despite the DA asking for bail. This is what should be.

A giant gathering at Grand Central right now demanding free transit in NYC, and cops out of our subways. Police just arrested one man for unknown reasons and the crowd surged forward, chanting: “THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING!”
