      This is pretty gross, really. “It’s not that bad” has been the herald of the thin end of the wedge for as far as I can remember. DRM is disgusting in all of its forms and like a cockroach, every one you let live multiplies.

      I’m not familiar with that argument, but in its surface it seems like a completely separate issue from introducing a mechanism to make a piece of software or hardware artificially fail.

      2/ And I don’t buy into the argument that keeping the code proprietary is some kind of DRM. It’s another form of control, but it doesn’t create artificial failure states.

      I see now how you’re trying to connect the two by lumping them into the larger category of gatekeeping. On that I agree. To be clear I’m not a fan of closed source either, but not all gatekeeping meets the definition of DRM.

      In this case it is "stolen" open source so to speak. And you did whittle down to the raw point in fact. In this "MiSTer" community specifically the crowd getting upset about "DRM" has no place to, given that the foundation of their house is built on stolen lumber & concrete.

      Until you brought it up I had no idea the MiSTer operating environment was violating the GPL. That doesn’t in any way invalidate my complaint about DRM or my grounds to hold it, but I am also on the side of “release the source or stop using GPL code”.

      "invalidate my complaint about DRM" completely fair to hold that opine regarding the Jotego Beta, and the implementation in the unofficial script.
