Im not an expert in open source but a more correct term could be "in spec" or "out of spec" just not to break compatibility I guess. "Official" is not a term that seems appropriate to me in open source. Boogie should shed some light on this topic.

How can you get mad when the cores itself is a copy or knockoff or the original hardware. Technically speaking it’s someone else’s design copied in a different format to mimic the original.

Same with the OSSC if people see a chinese sellers selling them its a knockoff mmm its a completely open source project anyone can make one it's not a knock off its more a case of quality i would say.

These are sadly consequences for folks that seek to use "Open Source", "GPL" or "Creative Commons" as a buzz word to attract attention, or hype to their project, all the while not understanding its use.
