Those buttons on the left and bottom are directional buttons. Left, down, Right, then the bottom button is Up. Not very different from using a pad or keyboard to play.

The layout is the hitbox style, there's a few variations of it out there. Most commerical sticks have a aftermarket replacement panel you can get if you're interested.
