Calling dumping your own games a "gray area" is carrying water for the copyright lobby, though, and needs to be pushed back against in every instance. According to Smoke, folks dumping their own games for MiSTer has unearthed several revisions previously unknown to goodset/redump

While I agree about the copyright lobby, it's literally true that it's a legal grey area. Pointing that out is just pointing out facts. Laws need to be adjusted for this, but to date they haven't been and so far as I know no litigation has been taken up on either side.

Sure, sure. I even do it on my flash carts. Do I own every game ever made and all regional variants? Of course I do, why do you ask officer? Here's the thing, even if I don't own it, I just download it for a 24hr test period and then delete it. If Metallica has taught me any...

That 24 hour rumor is a common misconception. "Reproducing or distributing copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holder is against the law regardless of how long you hold on to the music/movie." https://dmca.ucr.edu/faqs.html pic.twitter.com/BdJO7RFYrv

I don't consider the MiSTer piracy-based, but rather preservation friendly. With FPGA and the right coding, we can preserve a bunch of these arcade games (that will eventually fail for good) in the form of perfectly executed hardware behavior. So I feel the MiSTer is a good thing

This is the right attitude to take. Preservation > Intellectual property. History has shown we can't rely on the original game developers and manufacturers to make sure the games stay available.

Why do we even still talk about how downloading ROMs is piracy? Anyone own a time machine to be able to go back and buy the games they want for full price, thus putting food on the table of the devs back in 19xx? No? Then there's no conversation to be had about it.
-
"Then there's no conversation to be had about it" this makes literally ZERO sense. It also clarifies that you flat out do not understand how "royalties" or family assets work. Your family estate is entitled to your royalties even after you pass for examplehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royalty_payment …

IP laws are such a complicated area with untested cases. You can dump, but it’s not legal to download a rom dump. The fucking moral ground and hypocrisy is what pissed me off. Not to mention BIOS files. I wonder how many paid for the amiga kickstart rom or knew it was an option

Btw wasn’t her that explained the meaning of the handle mentioning her disdain for intelectual properties!? Even Louisiana food is not that rich

I’d post a screen shot but someone would rage and say we were getting personal.
