I thought all you needed is a RS-485 transceiver plus a cheap USB to UART converter, as this kind of inexpensive (<$2) adapters. Si, not User IO port needed really (nor IOBoard, just connect this to the USB-OTG Cable (or to a USB HUB):https://es.aliexpress.com/item/33017179197.html …
aka the "USB to UART" part is actually unnecessary. I think technically with a single node, you could even completely forgo the MAX485 IC to be honest. That will be an exercise for another day though.
