      actually im starting to see what you mean. Then it made me think how you can buy preconfigured, fully assembled MiSTer units. So yeah, MiSTer is a product at this point, even if the creators/devs dont intend for it to be.

          Having worked on both open source and commercial "consoles", maybe the distinction is inherently more apparent to me but I'm also poor at explaining, words, and other non-coding skills.
