A well architected system nowadays should have abstraction layers to allow storage, “business logic”, and UI to all be separate. Business logic here would be loading cores, settings, etc. If true then the UI, in theory, could be swapped out. I smell tightly coupled code.

I get the push for performance, but if the UI is able to be replaced why push back, just let another developer give it a shot and either succeed or fail. Worst case they learn something that could enhance the original system.
