The problem with free-market folks is they call those who extract value geniuses instead of those who create value. So those who build the commons are forgotten and those who privatise it and exploit it best for their own personal gain are celebrated.

Agreed (love your writings!). But “very naughty boy” is infantilising (yes, these are often menchildren (see: Silicon Valley (not the TV show)) but also references “boys will be boys”. These are adult male humans. Let’s hold them to account as such. “Naughty boy” doesn’t cut it.
-
It’s a reference to Monty Python’s life of Brian: http://montypython.wikia.com/wiki/File:He%27s_not_the_Messiah,_he%27s_a_very_naughty_boy …!
-
I know :) (Can quote it just about line by line. But you couldn’t have known that.)
-
PS. Agree completely with your argument.

stallman? a guy who famously has bad hygiene and ate something from his foot during an interview? great role model...
-
By that criteria, Nazis would make great role models. Have you seen how well they dress? Impeccable! I hear they smell great too. Or maybe we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
-
You and I might know there's more to RMS than that, but it's not us you've got to convince.
-
I know. And we do definitely need a far more approachable, accessible, and diverse set of role models. Role models who, ideally, don’t want to be role models (as the other big challenge is not to lift folks up on pedestals and thus perpetuate a centralised model of governance).
-
Agreed. But it wouldn't hurt things if we had a few people who are great *and* that aren't mildly embarrassing.
-
I’d submit Torvalds instead of Stallman. His software is real community and not islands guarded by elitism like Stallman’s.

Berners-Lee, who supported the W3C's DRM standardisation move and then didn't see the irony when he tweeted about wanting software that works for the user not the provider (because tweetdeck changed something)? great role model...
-
Yes, no one is perfect. Please feel free to suggest better ones.

Agree, except for the stallman part - there's evidence he's a mysogynist that has kept women from excelling in computer science. Twitterverse lit him up just a few weeks ago.

Do you have a link? Just tried looking it up to no avail. Will read up.

Remember this is a lad who was hauled before the University board for doing pretty much what the EP pulled him up for..... spying, tracking, voyeurism and breach of privacy....
