#RightsCon is sponsored by Google and Facebook. Google/Facebook are surveillance capitalists. Their business model is steeped in violating your human right to privacy. A human rights conference sponsored by Big Data is like a healthcare conference sponsored by Big Tobacco.https://twitter.com/arzugeybulla/status/997607430572924928 …

You cannot be a “human rights conference” and be sponsored by corporations like Google/Facebook whose primary business model relies on violating our human right to privacy. That there isn’t outrage about this—even today—is an abject moral failure of the privacy community.

I understand your point I don’t think the communities at risk and activists who can take advantage of the space to engage with these corporations and hold them accountable would benefit more from there being no space at all for engagement.

That’s a false dichotomy. Those spaces can exist without being __sponsored__ by those companies. Having organised an international conference myself without their sponsorship and attended/spoken at many others, I know first-hand that it is possible.

I understand. Can’t comment on the economics of the thing personally.

And yet the economics of the thing are at the heart of institutional corruption. It’s the very thing we cannot continue to ignore and what we must hold institutions accountable for.

Yeah, though I see the economics of it as structurally violent. Some can challenge these structures more easily than others (again as for Access, I can’t comment, I don’t know enough). Not all of those present at RC should be blamed for it imho.

You're communicating all of this with tweets. On Twitter. One of those very 'corporations like Google/Facebook whose primary business model relies on violating our human right to privacy.' I liked your tweet. I am using the platform as well. It leaves me feeling very conflicted.pic.twitter.com/sbm7Dd2dpr

If all the roads and pavements were built using slave labour, those who oppose slavery would still use them to march against slavery. We will, of course, use the tools of surveillance capitalism against its interests whenever we can: https://ar.al/notes/spyware-vs-spyware/ …
