(An extreme example to illustrate the point: you have 2 kidneys & can live with 1 but I cannot compel you to give one up even to save someone’s life. I can’t violate the boundaries of your person. Similarly, I‘ve no right to violate the non-biological boundaries of your person.)

That’s another really poor analogy, sorry. First, digital data aren’t exclusive; they can be shared in a way a kidney can’t. Second, kidneys can’t be used in anonymised and aggregate form; data can. And that’s just two basic differences.

(The rights of researchers do not trump the rights of the individuals being studied. Not unless we’re being colonial/anthropological in our approach. Even when it might benefit society as a whole we do not have the right to overlook the human rights of the individuals involved.)

Sure, and if and when those platforms are ever used by a substantial number of people that’s what should happen. In the meantime, however, we’re going to have to deal with the platforms that people actually use. Because again, not scrutinising what happens there isn’t an option.
