When has the security company hired to protect the factory farm ever cared about the well-being of the livestock? Security and privacy are related but not the same. You cannot have privacy without security but you can (and frequently do) have security without privacy.https://twitter.com/lukOlejnik/status/994114554715140096 …

Security company "predicting" catastrophic consequences of #GDPR - of course - max fines, always, avoiding details, as if this was set in stone. How big is a problem when security companies don't get GDPR right? https://documents.trendmicro.com/assets/rpt/rpt-paradigm-shifts.pdf … pic.twitter.com/eHyDv1KMXh

To understand the relationship between security and privacy, consider this: Google has great security but zero privacy. They keep your data (you) as safe as possible because it is not your data, it’s their data and they have a financial interest in protecting their assets (you).

Can a service also be private but not secure? Telegram comes to mind, since they claim to value privacy.

Not really, because if it is not secure it cannot be private as privacy requires the ability to secure that which you want to keep private. Whether or not a thing that is secure is private depends on who has access.

That makes sense. I was thinking of an analogy where I shouldn’t _have_ to lock my front door to be in the privacy of my own home, but I guess that doesn’t make much sense.

And yet the key point is that the core thing we’re lacking in the digital/networked space today is our own homes: instead we have Facebook and the cost of rent is having cameras and microphones in our rooms. We can lock the doors but we can’t turn off the surveillance devices.
