What is specifically wrong with the argument? Purchasing power is what matters for the satisfaction of needs and wants not nominal wealth. or is it the basket of goods chosen that you object to?
-
I reject the premise of your argument. Purchasing power of consumer goods isn’t a yardstick for human welfare: what is the availability and cost of housing, what about healthcare, education… are there _meaningful_ jobs? What’s the state of inequality. These matter.
-
True, but now you are into the game of designing a complete social system to maximise happiness rather than dealing with the narrow question of whether real wages are growing or stagnating which was the point that account you criticised was addressing.
-
The satisfaction of the need for consumer goods is a significant argument even if it is not the complete picture. So not exactly ‘scraping the bottom of the barrel’.
