That sounds great, but what is the solution?

Here’s the general plan: https://ar.al/notes/encouraging-individual-sovereignty-and-a-healthy-commons/ … and one initiative our not-for-profit is working on building right now, supported by the City of Ghent: https://indienet.info – others are working on similar projects. Overarching ethos: https://ind.ie/ethical-design

I like the initative, congratulations. Has any group of people sued Facebook and other companies for breaching the terms/contract when they gave out information to the NSA, do you know? I think that's more powerful (if Justice actually worked)

And again, they should be judged for sharing information with the surveillance State which was certainly not in their terms of service. As for what people agree to, I'm sorry – it's that: an agreement.
-
I did not agree to have my phone number and contact information vacuumed up from my friends' phones. I did not agree for my IP to be logged on every page that has a Facebook "Like" button. This goes far beyond any "agreement". And no, being on the internet is NOT implicit consent

More broadly: the logic of "you don't have to use it" would equally apply to complaining about others' complaints. If you don't like someone complaining, you're not forced to read or reply.
-
and by that I mean, the folks saying "don't have to use it" are hypocrites *as well as* being wrong about the practical matter of (lack of) ease of abstinence from modern technology

Would rather not use Goggle for obv. reasons (they also skew results as well as track data). Ecosia are more Ethical on the whole. Although it depends what you use search engines for in terms of result matches. Is there such thing as a ‘clean’ search engine?
-
[Goggle Scholar gives better results on research topics by the way, something many aren’t aware of, but it’s still the big G corporate machine. Would dearly love to avoid altogether, but that seems to mean switching off entirely.

And don't create online accounts for corporate stores like Walmart or Target or Best Buy either. And don't even think about making credit card accounts.
