I think we can take Google to task without lionizing the classist company that started the war against general purpose computing.

Agree. Not lionising; merely pointing out differences in business models (see thread: https://twitter.com/aral/status/989598241825214465 …) and https://ar.al/notes/apple-vs-google-on-privacy-a-tale-of-absolute-competitive-advantage/ … Also see their behaviour when it’s not a competitive advantage (eg., in China). No multibillion-dollar company is your friend :)

Apple uses proprietary software to restrict users freedom to run any program they wish. Any program run on iOS devices has to be approved by Apple. https://stallman.org/apple.html
-
Apple licenses their products to their users they don’t sell them. This is made clear by Apple’s attempts to restrict the user’s ability to repair their products without first going through Apple.
-
You’re right on all counts. And Apple’s business model is still 180 degrees removed from Google’s when it comes to privacy. So all those things are true. (See https://ar.al/notes/apple-vs-google-on-privacy-a-tale-of-absolute-competitive-advantage/ …)

This is institutionalized bias that is typical of many imperial media organisations and rating organisations..

It's productive to look at criteria, i.e., in what sense & respect Google comes out on top. How study frames privacy & what the indicators used show. If the study is misleading - & I'm not saying it isn't - we have to analyze the terms that misconstrue the reality it represents.

The irony is that part of taking people’s privacy seriously is not arbitrary reporting internal policies to anyone that asks. Also, Apple has very few public facing services where people can openly express themselves to begin with. Their model is primarily private communications.
