“Smart City” is a Silicon Valley brand. It is a vision of the future where our cities are panopticons where our governments and a handful of corporations get smarter about us. Smart Citizen is a rejection of this Silicon Valley imperialism. It is the opposite of a Smart City.

A Smart Citizen platform is: • Funded from the commons for the common good • Free and open • Decentralised/federated • Interoperable (no lock in) It is a platform that is owned & controlled by the people. It is a platform that enables people to get smarter about themselves.

Just out of curiosity. Do you think a platform can start „by the commons“? Would it not need to start private and then transition to a commons platform? Issue is „laziness/indifference of the commons“, or how do you solve that?

The Internet was started “by the commons” (and by that, I mean with taxpayer money) so yes, definitely. Our project is one example. We do and should be funding public infrastructure from the public purse if we don’t want it to be privately-owned and controlled.

Got you (now I did). I had misunderstood it, then. I will get back to you though, once we try to jumpstart our solution! Thanks for the fight, Aral!
