You’re going to see Facebook/Google repent & implement superficial changes.
You’re going to hear talk of “attention”, “addiction”, and self-regulation.
You’re going to see VCs funding what they purport to be ethical alternatives.
All this is bullshit.

Clarify the Mozilla part of this statement? I'm just not sure I'm reading it as intended.
-
Mozilla is fully funded by surveillance capitalism (historically: Google, then Yahoo, now Google again). It has made billions of dollars from it and depends on surveillance capitalism for its existence.
-
Hm. It's certainly possible to be funded and yet not be aligned lock-step with the funding source; sometimes it's even necessary. I have no deep insights into Mozilla operations but if we're ranking organizations on a privacy continuum, I'd think they'd plot nearer EFF than GAFA.
-
Do you grant them credit for recent 'multi-account container' and 'facebook container' plugins? Or do you view these as pandering? How about Privacy Lab? https://wiki.mozilla.org/Privacy/Privacy_Lab … I believe Firefox was one of the earliest implementations of DNT. +Quite a few other reference pts.

OK. So let me speak for us, not them. If you ever hear that http://Ind.ie has started taking funding from Google or Facebook or any other surveillance capitalist, don’t trust a single thing I say from that point on. And I don’t mean billions like Mozilla. Just any.
-
I hold in very high esteem the purist stance of http://Ind.ie 's positions, products, initiatives; as well your &
@laurakalbag's work generally. I'd love for many more of us to be able to carve & hack away at 'surveillance capitalism' & privacy erosions... -
Certainly worthy of critical eyes, but in this case, I don't find it useful to strike an organization out because the majority of revenue derives from Google. Glancing over Moz's annual reports, it seems there are numerous initiatives to applaud that wouldn't otherwise exist.
-
Would you trust Greenpeace if they got nearly all their revenue/billions from Exxon Mobil? It does astound me how our industry seems incapable of seeing institutional corruption even when it stares us in the face in our own backyard.
