There are plenty of new and small businesses (especially in Europe) that don’t have the startup business model, yes. They’re better than startups. We should not call them startups as that’s a Silicon Valley brand. And we must fund/support them as the Silicon Valley machine won’t.https://twitter.com/rubendinho/status/980458874619691008 …

Interesting distinction btw start-ups and stay-ups. I realise I work mainly with stay-ups. So for you a start-up's goal is obligatorily surveillance and data-gathering under the guise of providing a service to non-paying people?

Not for me, for the venture capitalists that bet $5M that the startup would succeed and they could conclude its sale (it was sold the moment they took the VC on condition that the sale would conclude in ~5yrs) via an IPO or sale to a larger business with the same business model.

"Surveillance capitalism" also interesting. Thinking about it, all big internet corps (google, FB, amazon, snap, who else) made money by gathering data from unsuspecting users and selling them.

Interested in hearing more about stay ups bc I have ideas and projects that I would like to obtain dunking for for but don't want to exit or IPO. I want to make great products & maintain quality. Not sell to a larger company that doesn't care or only wants to discontinue.

The way I see it is their goal is to make as much money as fast as possible even if that means giving control to someone else or selling the business. My goal is to make great products at a sustainable rate (free and paid). Different goals.
