Snake oil salesman (n): a VC who peddles ethical technology when it is the fundaments of VC that gave us Surveillance Capitalism to begin with. VC doesn’t invest in the business, it invests in its sale (the exit). VC is not compatible with respect for human rights or democracy.

VCs bet on 10 high risk startups, knowing 9 are going to fail. So they need the 10th to be a billion-dollar “unicorn”. The only business model that scales that way is people farming. VC is at the heart of the
#SurveillanceCapitalism problem. It is the poisoned seed at its core.https://twitter.com/aral/status/978545029366079488 …Show this thread -
People farming isn’t a new business model, it’s the evolution of another highly profitable model that was previously both legal and widespread: slavery.https://twitter.com/aral/status/978545520162607104 …

In slavery we owned people’s bodies. Today, Silicon Valley doesn’t need your body. They can own everything else about you that makes you who you are and use that as a proxy to own you. That’s the actual business model of

To fix surveillance capitalism, we must fix not just the surveillance part but the capitalism part also. We must move beyond the toxic, myopic, VC-funded business model of Silicon Valley to fund ethical alternatives from the commons for the common good. https://ar.al/notes/encouraging-individual-sovereignty-and-a-healthy-commons …https://twitter.com/aral/status/978546527277862912 …

I’ll end by commending The City of Ghent for doing just that by supporting our efforts at
@indie to build a free/open/interoperable federated personal web site platform. Alternative funding exists. An alternative future is possible. We will move beyond#SurveillanceCapitalismhttps://twitter.com/aral/status/978547316264177665 …Show this thread
