I realise that selling our personal data is their entire business model but how else would you propose to pragmatically work with Google etc al. on changing them? (as opposed to working against them)?

You don’t work with them; pragmatically or otherwise. You regulate them. You cannot change their business model. They are hugely successful by capitalist criteria. You can’t transform a factory farm into an animal sanctuary. So regulate + replace (with ethical alternatives).
