As the scandal engulfing @CamAnalytica and @Facebook unfolds, it’s worth examining how @Facebookdesign is complicit in creating systems that can be weaponised against users:https://ourdataourselves.tacticaltech.org/posts/30-on-weaponised-design/ …

Meanwhile, an
@interfacelovers interview with@_dte explores hard hitting questions, eg “What does a typical day look like?” and “What’s your setup?” At this critical time, design is still obsessed with workspaces, personal rituals and tooling. https://interfacelovers.com/interviews/daniel-eden …pic.twitter.com/TnnsnHTPoB

Design has a political problem that extends from the very surface of aesthetics, and right down to the core practices around decision making processes. Within the interface, we deploy surveillance disguised as user flow research, non-consensual user testing & design for ‘trust’

At the core of our work, we depoliticise and decontextualise interaction design in the pursuit of frictionless, delightful experiences. We must change this, but the discussion just isn’t there yet.

It’s tempting to describe a process of “ethical design” (see: Mike Monterio,
@aral, etc). But this does nothing more than help absolve a designer who considers their work ethical. It’s unhelpful without a complete examination and overhaul of the accepted methods of practice.1 reply 3 retweets 4 likesShow this thread -
SHIBA COMPUTER Retweeted Aral Balkan
This idea of ethical design is the true next step – that is, benevolent intentions when designing – allows designers to point at their own work and say, “I’m operating ethically.” It’s the same kind of mindset that produces beliefs like this:https://twitter.com/aral/status/975643691254730752 …
SHIBA COMPUTER added,
Aral Balkan @aralEric Schmidt once told me “if we become truly evil, we won’t find anyone to work for us.” They know it’s their Archilles’ heel. They need the best of the best. If the best of the best leave, they stagnate. Leave the regulating to the regulators and work on ethical alternatives. https://twitter.com/aral/status/975642727009456128 …Show this thread2 replies 2 retweets 1 likeShow this thread
Ethical design begins at the design of the organisation. How is it funded? What is its business model? (How does it make money?) If the answers are, respectively, “venture capital” and/or “monetising data”, we can’t even begin to speak of ethically designing the products.
