“Good folks should keep working at Facebook and Google as they regulate their worst abuses” is as silly an argument as “vegans should work at factory farms” and “doctors should work for Philip Morris”. No, you legitimise and enable the abuses of those companies. You’re complicit.

Eric Schmidt once told me “if we become truly evil, we won’t find anyone to work for us.” They know it’s their Archilles’ heel. They need the best of the best. If the best of the best leave, they stagnate. Leave the regulating to the regulators and work on ethical alternatives.https://twitter.com/aral/status/975642727009456128 …

That was my first thought too. But I realised later Eric wasn’t being naïve, just honest if a tad imprecise: he meant the best of the best. They don’t need just anyone; they need the top minds. If the top minds leave for ethical reasons, they have a major problem on their hands.

I suppose not every top mind would feel working at Google or Facebook is a lure they can not deny. I find it hard to believe replacements couldn't be found, though.

OTOH, there's this https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/mar/16/silicon-valley-internal-work-spying-surveillance-leakers … which is bound to be a downer

None of the top minds go into this work. Not even top 10%. You need assholes with no ethical concerns. Plenty of those in a society designed to breed them straight into amoral industries.
